Cyberstalking
Using the internet or other electronic means to stalk or harass an individual.
What is it?
Cyberstalking involves the use of technology, particularly the internet, to harass someone. This can include false accusations, monitoring, threats, identity theft, and data destruction or manipulation. It often co-occurs with real-world stalking.
Applicable Laws
Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 354D (Stalking). Sections 66E, 67, 67A of the IT Act.
Penalties
First conviction can result in imprisonment up to three years and a fine. Subsequent convictions can lead to imprisonment up to five years and a fine.
Safety Tips
- Clearly tell the harasser to stop all contact.
- Block the person on all platforms and set your social media profiles to private.
- Keep a detailed record of all incidents, including dates, times, and screenshots.
- Report the stalking to the platform and the police.
