Malware
Software intentionally designed to cause disruption to a computer, server, client, or computer network.
What is it?
Malware (short for malicious software) is a catch-all term for any type of software designed to harm or exploit any programmable device, service or network. This includes viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware, and adware.
Applicable Laws
Section 43 and Section 66 of the IT Act cover damage to computer systems and spreading viruses.
Penalties
Imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with a fine which may extend to five lakh rupees or with both.
Safety Tips
- Install and maintain anti-virus software.
- Be cautious of free software downloads from unknown sources.
- Scan email attachments before opening them.
- Avoid clicking on pop-up ads.
