Online Predators

Individuals who use the internet to exploit, abuse, or endanger children and teens.

What is it?

Online predators are adults who use chat rooms, social media, online games, and other platforms to build trust with minors with the intent to harm them. They might pretend to be someone of a similar age to gain trust before exploiting them.

Applicable Laws

The POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act), 2012, and various sections of the IPC and IT Act are applicable.

Penalties

Severe penalties, including long-term imprisonment, depending on the nature of the crime.

Safety Tips

  • Never share personal information like your address, school name, or phone number with strangers online.
  • Be careful about the pictures you share online. Never send inappropriate photos of yourself.
  • If someone makes you feel uncomfortable or scared online, tell a parent, teacher, or another trusted adult immediately.
  • Never agree to meet someone in person you only know from the internet.
