Photo Morphing
Creating and distributing morphed, often obscene, images of a person without consent.
What is it?
Photo morphing involves editing or manipulating a person's original image to create a fake one, which is often obscene or defamatory. These images are then used for blackmail, harassment, or to damage a person's reputation.
Applicable Laws
Sections 66E, 67, 67A of the IT Act, 2000. IPC Sections 499 (Defamation), 509 (Insulting the modesty of a woman).
Penalties
Can range from imprisonment up to five years and a fine up to ten lakh rupees, depending on the nature of the content.
Safety Tips
- Be cautious about who you share your photos with.
- Use watermarks on photos you post publicly if possible.
- If you are a victim, immediately report the profile or content to the platform.
- File a complaint with the cybercrime police with all evidence.
