Ransomware

Malicious software that blocks access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid.

What is it?

Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts a victim's files. The attacker then demands a ransom from the victim to restore access to the data upon payment.

Applicable Laws

Considered extortion under IPC Section 383. Also falls under Sections 43 & 66 of the IT Act.

Penalties

Imprisonment for up to three years, or a fine up to five lakh rupees, or both.

Safety Tips

  • Regularly back up your important data to an external drive or cloud storage.
  • Do not open suspicious attachments or click on untrusted links.
  • Use reputable security software and keep it updated.
  • Never pay the ransom, as there's no guarantee you'll get your data back.
